In 2009, the name Dalia Dippolito became synonymous with a shocking murder-for-hire plot that unfolded in Palm Beach County, Florida. The 23-year-old’s attempt to hire a hitman to kill her husband, Michael Dippolito, drew national attention, exposing a web of deceit, manipulation, and undercover police operations. Here’s a detailed breakdown of the crime, the legal battles that ensued, and the eventual convictions that shook the community.
Dalia Mohammed, who later took on the surname Dippolito, was born in 1982 in New York. At the age of 13, she and her family relocated to Boynton Beach, Florida. Raised primarily by her mother after her parents divorced, Dalia’s upbringing seemed stable, but those who knew her described her as prone to arrogance and mood swings.
LISTEN TO THE ENTIRE CASE AND MY THOUGHTS
Following high school, Dalia explored various careers but ultimately worked as an escort. It was in this capacity that she met Michael Dippolito in 2008. Their relationship escalated rapidly, with Michael divorcing his then-wife and marrying Dalia in a courthouse just two months after their first encounter.
Michael Dippolito, born in 1970, had a troubled history marred by drug addiction and fraud. He had previously served two years in prison for a telemarketing scam and was placed on probation for 28 years. Despite these challenges, he managed to establish a life in Boynton Beach, running a marketing business from home.
The Dippolitos’ whirlwind romance quickly soured. Tensions ran high in their marriage, particularly due to Michael’s criminal background and Dalia’s secret affairs with two other men. By March 2009, mere months after their marriage, Michael found himself facing police scrutiny over dubious drug-related reports, one of which led to him being pulled over with cocaine planted in his car.

Fearing for his assets due to his probation status, Michael transferred the deed to their house to Dalia—a move that would later have devastating repercussions. Meanwhile, Dalia continued to manipulate him, persuading him to give her $100,000 to pay off his restitution.
By July 2009, Dalia escalated her plans and sought to eliminate Michael permanently. She approached her ex-boyfriend, Mohammed Shihadeh, to help her find a hitman. Shocked by her request, Shihadeh immediately reported her to the police, setting the stage for a dramatic undercover operation.
On July 30, 2009, Dalia met Shihadeh in a gas station parking lot, where she was introduced to an undercover officer posing as a hitman. During this meeting, she handed over $1,200 and provided detailed instructions for the murder. “I’m 5,000 percent sure,” she chillingly told the officer when asked if she really wanted her husband dead.
With assistance from the TV show Cops, law enforcement executed a dramatic sting operation. On August 5, while Dalia was at the gym, authorities staged a fake crime scene at her home. When Dalia returned, police informed her that her husband had been killed. Her reaction, captured on camera, showed her breaking down in apparent grief.
However, the façade crumbled at the police station when Michael appeared alive, revealing the entire operation had been a setup. Dalia was promptly arrested and charged with solicitation of first-degree murder.
In 2011, Dalia Dippolito stood trial for the first time. The prosecution presented the undercover video evidence, phone recordings, and testimony from Shihadeh. The defense countered that Dalia had been set up, suggesting the plot was a prank orchestrated by Michael to gain reality TV fame. However, the jury wasn’t convinced, and she was found guilty, receiving a 20-year prison sentence.
In 2014, Dippolito’s legal team successfully appealed the conviction, claiming the jury selection process had been flawed. This led to a second trial in 2016, which resulted in a mistrial after the jury was deadlocked.
In 2017, Dalia faced a third trial. Prosecutors introduced damning text messages, the undercover videos, and reiterated the cold and calculated nature of her actions. The defense again claimed entrapment, but this time, the jury convicted her of solicitation to commit first-degree murder. Judge Glenn Kelley sentenced her to 16 years in prison.
Dalia Dippolito remains incarcerated at the Lowell Correctional Institution. Despite multiple appeals, her conviction and sentence have been upheld. Michael Dippolito continues to navigate the emotional and financial fallout from the ordeal, expressing disbelief at the protracted legal battles surrounding the case.
The Dalia Dippolito case is an example of manipulation, greed, and the extremes to which some individuals will go for financial gain. Her willingness to eliminate her husband, combined with the dramatic undercover operation that exposed her plans, transformed this case into one of the most memorable murder-for-hire plots in recent history.
