In the latest true crime documentary episode of our true crime podcast, we delve into the shocking and heartbreaking case of Harmony Montgomery, a young girl whose life was marked by a series of tragic events, culminating in her mysterious disappearance. Harmony’s story is not just a tale of personal tragedy but also a glaring example of systemic failures within the child welfare system.
Harmony Montgomery was born in Manchester, New Hampshire, in 2014 to parents Crystal Sorey and Adam Montgomery. From the very beginning, Harmony faced numerous challenges, including a visual disability that left her blind in one eye. Her parents, both struggling with drug addiction, were unable to provide a stable and loving home. As a result, Harmony was shuffled between her mother, various foster families, and ultimately her father, Adam, who had a history of criminal behavior.
In February 2019, despite Adam’s lack of experience and history of violence, he was awarded custody of Harmony. This decision by the Massachusetts court system, without a thorough assessment of Adam’s capacity to parent, set the stage for the tragic events that followed. Harmony was subjected to severe abuse and neglect, living in a homeless shelter and enduring beatings from her father.
The situation took a darker turn when Harmony’s mother, Crystal, and her foster family lost contact with her. Despite Crystal’s repeated attempts to reach out to authorities, it wasn’t until late 2021 that an official investigation into Harmony’s disappearance began. By this time, Harmony had been missing for nearly two years, and crucial time had been lost.

As the investigation unfolded, chilling details emerged. Adam’s wife, Kayla Montgomery, revealed that Harmony had been killed by Adam in December 2019. According to Kayla, Adam had beaten Harmony to death in a fit of rage. The couple then moved Harmony’s body from place to place, attempting to cover up the crime.
Despite the lack of a physical body, forensic evidence and witness testimonies led to Adam’s arrest and subsequent conviction. He was sentenced to 60 years in prison for a previous gun-related charge, with additional charges for Harmony’s murder pending. Kayla, in exchange for her cooperation, received a reduced sentence.
The case of Harmony Montgomery highlights significant flaws in the child welfare system, including poor cross-border communication and inadequate assessments of parental fitness. It has sparked calls for reforms to better protect vulnerable children and prevent similar tragedies in the future.
