In early 2021, a teenage girl and her boyfriend found themselves victims of relentless cyberbullying. The messages were cruel, demeaning, and frequent, arriving up to twelve times a day. The girl, a high schooler at Mount Pleasant High School, confided in her mother, Kendra Gail Licari. Kendra took the matter seriously, reporting the harassment to the police and working with the boyfriend’s mother to identify the bully.
Authorities were baffled. Investigators compiled 349 pages of disturbing messages but couldn’t trace the source. The school district and local police hit dead ends. It was only when the FBI got involved that the truth came to light: the bully was Kendra herself. Using a VPN to mask her location, Kendra had been sending the hateful messages to her daughter and the daughter’s boyfriend.
This revelation was shocking. Kendra, who had initially claimed it was a teenager behind the bullying, confessed when confronted by the FBI. She was charged with two counts of stalking a minor and sentenced to between 19 months and five years in prison. The court described the messages as “disturbing and hateful,” though their exact contents were kept private.
The case has sparked discussions about the psychological issues that might drive a parent to such behavior. Prosecutor David Barbelli suggested it could be a form of Cyber Munchausen syndrome, where a person creates problems for others to make themselves seem needed.
This episode also led to a Lifetime movie titled “Mommy Meanest,” which premiered on May 11.
Poll Question:
Should parents who cyberbully their own kids lose custody or face some type of restriction on their parental rights?
