Loran K. Cole | Murderpedia
On August 29, 2024, the state of Florida carried out its first execution of the year, putting an end to nearly three decades of appeals and legal battles for Loran Kenstley Cole. Cole, convicted in 1995 for the brutal murder of 18-year-old Florida State University student John Edwards, was executed by lethal injection, marking the conclusion of a tragic and horrifying case that began in 1994.
In February 1994, John Edwards and his sister Pam set out for a weekend camping trip in the Ocala National Forest, seeking to enjoy nature and capture its beauty through photography. Their peaceful plans took a dark turn when they encountered Loran Cole and his accomplice, William Paul. Cole introduced himself as “Kevin” and initially appeared friendly, even helping the siblings set up their campsite. However, the evening took a horrifying turn when Cole and Paul lured the siblings on a walk under the guise of searching for alligators.
Cole attacked John, slashing his throat and inflicting fatal skull fractures, while Paul restrained Pam. The men terrorized Pam for hours, repeatedly assaulting her before leaving her tied to a tree the following day. Alone and desperate, Pam managed to free herself and flagged down a passing car for help. Authorities later discovered John’s lifeless body at the scene.
The investigation moved swiftly. Within days, Cole and Paul were arrested in possession of the Edwards siblings’ stolen car, credit cards, and other belongings. Evidence, including Pam’s testimony, physical evidence from the scene, and the suspects’ possession of stolen items, solidified their connection to the crime. Cole was convicted of first-degree murder, kidnapping, robbery, and sexual battery. The jury recommended the death penalty, a sentence upheld throughout Cole’s nearly three-decade tenure on death row.
Paul, in contrast, accepted a plea deal and received five consecutive life sentences without parole.
Cole’s path through the legal system was marked by multiple appeals, challenges to Florida’s death penalty laws, and arguments citing his traumatic childhood, including severe abuse at the Arthur G. Dozier School for Boys. Despite these efforts, courts consistently upheld his sentence.
