On March 26, 2024, police in Plantation, Florida responded to a 911 call at the home of Jean Carlos Aponte and Sara Ashley Gama. What they found was a scene of unimaginable horror. Sara, 38, and her 2-year-old son, Ethan, were discovered dead, while Jean lay unconscious, the result of an apparent suicide attempt via drug overdose. Thankfully, the couple’s four-month-old child was unharmed.
Sara’s parents, worried when the couple failed to drop off one of the children as planned, had arrived at the house to find the family’s dog barking and the infant crying. Inside, they discovered the gruesome scene: Sara on the kitchen floor, covered in blood, and Jean unconscious in the bedroom. Ethan was later found in the pool, with stab wounds marking his small body.
As investigators pieced together the events, a picture of a troubled marriage began to emerge. According to the arrest warrant, Jean had recently been confronted by Sara about an extramarital affair. Text messages between the couple revealed Sara’s heartbreak and anger over the betrayal. “You broke a lot of things. It’s quite serious,” Sara had texted Jean. In response, he admitted, “I’m not a good person.”
The warrant also detailed the physical evidence found at the scene. Bloody footprints and smears were discovered throughout the house, along with two blood-covered kitchen knives. The autopsy reports revealed that Ethan had suffered stab wounds and drowning, while Sara had been stabbed 28 times, with defensive wounds indicating a desperate struggle.
Further investigation revealed that Jean was battling significant mental health issues. A veteran with a history of PTSD and a traumatic brain injury, he had recently sought help from various veterans’ organizations. Chris Haley, from the Catch A Lift Fund, a group providing mental health support to veterans, recalled Jean’s desire to “make things right” for his family. Despite these efforts, it seemed the weight of his struggles became too much to bear.
Sara’s father, unaware of any marital issues, described Jean as a loving husband and father, though he acknowledged Jean’s occasional anger outbursts. He noted that Jean had been taking medications like Ambien and Melatonin to manage sleep issues, potentially contributing to his unstable state.
As the investigation continued, Jean was charged with two counts of first-degree murder, after he went to his first court appearance, the judge ordered a mental health evaluation.
