Khari Sandford
In a case of domestic strife aggravated by the pressures of the COVID-19 pandemic, 21-year-old Khari Sanford from Wisconsin finds himself convicted for the brutal killing of Dr. Beth Potter and Robin Carre, parents of his girlfriend, Miriam Carre.
Khari Sanford’s relationship with Miriam Carre took a dark turn when Covid-19 hit. Seeking a solution to be close to Miriam while adhering to social distancing, her parents, Dr. Potter and Robin Carre, allowed Sanford to move into their home. However, Sanford’s defiance of social distancing rules became a source of frequent arguments within the household.
In an attempt to ease the tension, Potter and Carre temporarily relocated Sanford and their daughter to an Airbnb, covering the expenses until the couple could secure their own apartment. Sanford, however, harbored feelings that his girlfriend’s parents did not respect him, adding fuel to the already strained situation.

Assistant District Attorney Tim Verhoff painted a grim picture during closing arguments, stating,
“They should have been living in fear of Khari Sanford.”
Sanford, accused of kidnapping the couple at gunpoint, orchestrated a horrifying act. He took them to the UW Arboretum, where he fatally shot both victims at point-blank range. The bodies were discovered in a ditch outside the University of Wisconsin Arboretum.
Sanford’s public defender, Crystal Vera, rejected claims that Sanford was perceived as dangerous. However, the court found him guilty of first-degree intentional homicide after a three-hour jury deliberation in May 2022. Sanford displayed no reaction to the verdict, facing mandatory life sentences.

Sanford’s friend, Ali’jah Larrue, who was present during the killings, pleaded guilty to two counts of felony murder with kidnapping as the underlying crime. Despite claiming ignorance about Sanford’s plans, he was sentenced to eight years in prison. Miriam Carre, not implicated in the case, testified that she was unaware of Sanford’s intentions, emphasizing fear and alleging abuse throughout their relationship.

and sentenced him to life in prison without the possibility of parole. The judge’s stern words reflected the gravity of Sanford’s actions, sending a stern message about the consequences of such heinous crimes.
The tragic tale of Khari Sanford serves as a reminder of the complexities that can arise within relationships, exacerbated by external pressures such as a global pandemic. The conviction brings a semblance of justice to the grieving families, but it doesn’t bring back the parties whose lives were tragically lost.
