In the latest episode of our true crime podcast, we delve into one of the most harrowing and perplexing cases we’ve ever covered—the story of Gregory Green. This is a tale that will leave you questioning the very fabric of our justice system and the safeguards meant to protect us from repeat offenders.
Gregory Green’s life seemed to be on a dark trajectory from the start. Raised in a strict religious household, little is known about his early years. Fast forward to the 1990s, and Gregory is married to Tonya Clayton, who had two young children from a previous relationship. The family moved into their own home in Detroit, Michigan, and it seemed like they were on the path to a happy life. However, Gregory’s increasingly violent and controlling behavior shattered this facade.
On July 14, 1991, Gregory’s rage culminated in the brutal murder of Tonya, who was six months pregnant at the time. He stabbed her ten times in various parts of her body, leading to her death and that of their unborn child. Shockingly, Gregory was sentenced to just 15 to 25 years for this heinous crime. During his time in prison, he showed no remorse, instead blaming Tonya for her own murder. Despite this, he was released in 2008, thanks to the advocacy of friends, family, and even correction officers who believed he had changed.
But the nightmare didn’t end there. After his release, Gregory married Faith Harris, the daughter of a pastor who had vouched for him. Faith had known Gregory since she was 14 and had always harbored a crush on him. They settled in Dearborn Heights, Michigan, and had two daughters together. However, Gregory’s abusive behavior soon resurfaced, leading Faith to file for divorce multiple times. Tragically, her attempts to escape were thwarted by a judicial system that failed to recognize the danger she was in.
On September 21, 2016, Gregory’s violence erupted once more. He woke Faith in the early hours, dragged her into the living room, and made her watch as he murdered her two eldest children from a previous marriage. He had already killed their two young daughters using carbon monoxide poisoning. Gregory then called 911, calmly confessing to the murders.
