On November 18, 2012, 13-year-old Dylan Redwine was last seen alive when his father, 60-year-old Mark Redwine, picked him up from Durango-La Plata County Airport for a court-ordered Thanksgiving visit. Dylan had expressed reluctance to see his father, telling his mother and older brother Cory that he was uncomfortable around him. His discomfort around his father was evident, especially after he and his brother, Cory, had discovered disturbing photos of their father.
After picking Dylan up from the airport, the father and son stopped by Walmart where they had minimal interaction. Mark had refused to let Dylan stay with a friend that night, and they returned to his home in Vallecito, Colorado. That evening, Dylan texted his friend, planning to visit him at 6:30 the next morning. But when his friend texted him at 6:46 a.m. to find out where Dylan was, there was no response. Mark later claimed he had left the house to run errands and found Dylan missing when he returned.

Dylan’s mother, Elaine Hall, immediately suspected Mark was involved in her son’s disappearance and called 911. As law enforcement searched for Dylan, disturbing revelations about Mark’s past behavior began to surface. An ex-wife recalled Mark once saying he would leave a body in the mountains if he ever had to get rid of one. She also shared how Mark had once threatened to “kill the kids before letting her have them.”
On June 27, 2013, Dylan’s partial remains were found eight miles from Mark’s house. Two years later, in November 2015, hikers discovered Dylan’s skull further up the mountain. Forensic experts testified that Dylan had likely died from blunt force trauma and sharp force injuries. These wounds were consistent with the violent nature of the crime, dispelling theories that animals had moved his remains.
Throughout the investigation, Mark Redwine maintained his innocence. His behavior, however, raised suspicion. He appeared on the Dr. Phil show in 2013, denying involvement in his son’s death but refusing to take a polygraph test. Cadaver dogs later detected the scent of human remains in Redwine’s living room and his truck. Further evidence, including Dylan’s blood found in the house, pointed to Mark.
In 2017, five years after Dylan’s death, Mark Redwine was indicted on charges of second-degree murder and child abuse resulting in death. His trial, delayed multiple times due to COVID, finally took place in 2021.
During the trial, the prosecution argued that the discovery of the lewd photos had caused a deep rift between father and son. Dylan’s older brother, Cory, revealed that in 2011, both he and Dylan had found unsettling photos of their father — Mark dressed in women’s lingerie and consuming feces from a diaper. Dylan had planned to confront his father about the photos during the visit, a confrontation that authorities believe triggered Mark’s violent rage, leading to the murder.

Mark’s defense attorneys claimed that Dylan had either been abducted or attacked by wild animals.
On October 8, 2021, Mark Redwine was sentenced to 48 years in prison, the maximum penalty allowed under Colorado law. Judge Jeffrey Wilson delivered a stern rebuke, saying,
“As a father, it’s your obligation to protect your son and keep him from harm. Instead of that, you inflicted enough injury on him to kill him in your living room.”
Dylan’s mother, Elaine, also spoke during the sentencing, expressing her grief and anger:
“You knew where Dylan was the whole time we were looking for him. And not once did you offer up any advice or suggestion as to where he would be.”
Cory Redwine echoed his mother’s pain, saying,
“Dylan is my hero. He became more of a man in his 13 years than Mark became in 60.”
Mark Redwine, throughout the trial and sentencing, showed no remorse. He referred to the proceedings as “fake justice” and continued to deny any responsibility for his son’s death.
