In this week’s midweek mini true crime story, we delve into a case that revolves around Carly Madison Gregg, a 14-year-old girl accused of murdering her mother, Ashley Smylie, and attempting to kill her stepfather, Heath Smylie, in their home in Brandon, Mississippi.
On a seemingly ordinary Tuesday evening, the Rankin County Sheriff’s Office responded to a distressing call. They found Heath Smylie with a gunshot wound to his shoulder and his wife, Ashley, dead from multiple gunshot wounds. The alleged perpetrator? Heath’s stepdaughter, Carly, who was found nearby and arrested shortly after the incident.
What makes this case particularly chilling is not just the act itself, but the events that unfolded afterward. Carly reportedly invited a friend over to the house to view the dead body, saying, “Ever seen a dead body?” This bizarre invitation adds another layer of complexity to an already shocking crime.
As the investigation progressed, more unsettling details emerged. Carly had allegedly planned to kill her stepfather as well, saving two bullets specifically for him. This premeditation has led to her being charged with first-degree murder, attempted murder, and tampering with physical evidence. Despite her young age, Carly has been transferred to an adult detention center and is being tried as an adult.
The defense has argued that Carly suffers from mental health issues, including hearing voices and experiencing visual hallucinations. They claim that a change in her medication just a week before the murder could have contributed to her actions. However, the prosecution counters that mental illness does not justify taking another person’s life and has pushed for a state-led mental health evaluation to ensure an unbiased assessment.

Is it fair to try a 14-year-old as an adult, especially when mental illness is part of the equation? These are the questions that Carly’s trial will grapple with as it moves forward.
