Midweek Mini | Murder-for-Hire or Home Invasion Gone Wrong | Case of Lindy Rummel

In the quiet town of Brush Prairie, Washington, a shocking crime has left the community reeling. On March 23, 2024, police responded to a call reporting a break-in and murder at the home of Lindy Rummell. What seemed like a straightforward robbery gone wrong quickly unraveled into a complex web of deceit and possible murder-for-hire.

Lindy Rummell, a 60-year-old woman, was found with multiple gunshot wounds, including a disturbing shot to the groin, indicating a possible personal vendetta. The crime scene revealed no forced entry but a chaotic mess with drawers and cabinets open and a pillowcase filled with odd items like leather chaps, gloves, and a collectible model car. The initial theory was a botched burglary, but the evidence suggested otherwise.

As the investigation progressed, police interviewed Lindy’s husband, James Rummell, who claimed to have been out with friends during the murder. However, suspicions arose when a tip led to the arrest of 55-year-old Darrell Riley, who was found at a bus station with a suspicious story. Riley allegedly confessed to a friend that he was hired to kill Lindy and stage the scene as a robbery. This friend, deciding to do the right thing, reported Riley to the authorities.

The plot thickened when it was revealed that James Rummell and Darrell Riley were friends who had met in prison. James allegedly offered Riley $35,000 and a motorcycle to carry out the murder. The investigation uncovered numerous financial issues in the Rummel household, adding a potential motive for the crime.

With both men in custody, the case is still unfolding. James maintains his innocence, while Darrell faces charges of first-degree murder and burglary. The trial is set for December.
