In the latest episode of our true crime podcast, we unravel the questionable and shocking story of Ike Souzer, a young man who has continually managed to escape the grasp of justice despite his violent tendencies and criminal actions.
Ike Souzer, who had a troubled childhood and was described by family and friends as autistic, first made headlines at the age of 13 when he ran away from home. His mother, Barbara Schuer Souzer, desperately sought the public’s help to find him. Tragically, when he returned, he attacked and stabbed her in their Garden Grove, California home. Despite her grievous injuries, Barbara managed to identify her son as the attacker before succumbing to her wounds.
Souzer was quickly apprehended and charged with voluntary manslaughter. However, his legal journey didn’t end there. During his trial, he claimed self-defense due to alleged years of extreme abuse, a defense that many found dubious given the circumstances of the attack. Nonetheless, he was convicted and sentenced to a juvenile facility.
The story takes a darker turn when, at the age of 15, Souzer attacked a corrections officer and managed to escape, only to be recaptured the next day. This pattern of escape and recapture would become a recurring theme in his life. Despite his violent history, including multiple assaults on corrections officers and creating a shiv while in custody, judges repeatedly reduced his charges and allowed for early release.
One of the most baffling aspects of this case is the leniency shown by the judges involved. District Attorney Todd Spitzer has been vocal in his criticism, stating that the judges failed to protect public safety by giving Souzer multiple chances to reoffend. Spitzer’s frustration is palpable as he recounts how Souzer took off his ankle bracelet, fled to Mexico, and was only recaptured with the help of Mexican authorities and U.S. Customs and Border Protection.
