In our latest episode, we unravel the chilling case of James Orlando Harris, a 54-year-old man found murdered in Portland, Oregon. The story begins on October 9, 2022, when police discovered James’ body in a sleeping bag dumped in some bushes off the highway. The autopsy revealed he had died from a hammer blow to the head and strangulation with a dog leash, with his death occurring five days prior to the discovery.
As we delve deeper, we learn about Zachary Hackman, who was vacationing with his girlfriend’s family on the day of the murder. His girlfriend, LaraJean Harris, who is also James’ daughter, unknowingly helped Zachary dispose of her father’s body. Zachary later confessed to LaraJean about the murder, but she never called the police out of fear for her own safety.
The investigation took a significant turn when surveillance footage captured Zachary covering James’ kitchen window with a towel and later, with LaraJean, carrying a heavy container to her car. Despite the evidence, Zachary claimed no recollection of the events leading to James’ disappearance.
On October 23, 2023, Zachary was arrested and charged with second-degree murder, unlawful use of a weapon, and abuse of a corpse. Following a plea agreement, he was sentenced to 19 years in prison, which many, including our host Ky, felt was too lenient for the severity of his crimes. The episode raises critical questions about the justice system and the effectiveness of plea deals in cases with overwhelming evidence.
