Pennsylvania mother drive 3 hours to shoot the family fostering her child - allegedly

A Pennsylvania woman allegedly took a 3 hour, 200 mile Lyft ride to confront a family fostering her child, only to allegedly fire gunshots at them.

Kayla Menne, a 25-year-old woman from Central Pennsylvania, traveled a surprising distance to Kennedy Township, where her biological child was under the care of foster parents. The confrontation took place on a quiet street, witnessed by residents, including Duane Mrazec, who was walking his dog at the time. He witnessed a woman getting out of a red car and saw that she was holding a gun.

One neighbor who saw her get out of the car as well, said that she opened fire “within seconds.” They witnessed the woman fire towards two adults and four children.

Duane described the moment saying,

“I was 4 to 6 feet away when she shot; I can see the flash at 6 pm at night in that gun because that’s how close she was.”

At first he thought the gun was a toy, but belief turned to horror when Kayla allegedly aimed the gun at him yelling,

“You took my baby!”

and started shooting. Then he realized the severity of the situation.

“The girl came out of the driver’s side back pointing the gun right at me and fired a shot, and that’s when everything goes blank to me.

My eyes were on that gun, and that was it. I wanted to get that gun before somebody got killed.”

Without hesitation, Duane tackled Kayla to the ground to stop her from hurting him or anyone else.

Thankfully, he managed to disarm her.

“She fired nine rounds, and that’s all she had, and it clicked because I didn’t know if she had a magazine. I went and grabbed the gun, kind of wrestled around with her, took her into the yard, got on top of her, wrestled her, couldn’t get the gun off of her. She was so strong.”

As the two wrestled on the ground, another neighbor, an off-duty cop, rushed to the house. Kayla, now subdued, reportedly apologized, acknowledging that Duane wasn’t supposed to be the target.

“She apologized to me because I wasn’t supposed to be the target, and she was saying something about her kid and then ‘arrest me, arrest me.”

She was restrained by Duane and the off-duty officer until police got there.

“Please just arrest me, I will not be violent.”

She then allegedly told the police that she “was trying to kill her kid.”

Kayla was taken to Heritage Valley Hospital where she underwent a mental health assessment. After she was discharged, she was arrested and, as per court records, she was charged with aggravated assault, reckless endangerment, unlawful possession of a firearm, and simple assault.

According to court documents, Kayla’s child had been removed from a previous foster family due to alleged threats and the sending suspicious packages.

So far, it’s unknown if she’s retained a lawyer.
