Thomas Hardiman (left) and Xander Howarth (right) were convicted after a trial provided by South Yorkshire Police
In early December 2023 in Sheffield, UK two teenagers, Thomas Hardiman and Xander Howarth, both 17 at the time, were sentenced to life in prison for the murder of Adam Abdul-Basit, 19.
On May 8, 2023, Thomas and Xander chased Adam into a garden and fatally stabbed him with a machete. Adam had tried to fight them off, but when he was stabbed he was unable to fight any longer. The pair left him in the garden to die, which he later did after suffering a 15 cm (6 inches) deep stab wound to his chest.

Thomas and Xander were arrested and charged with murder. In custody, they denied murdering Adam.
During their trial, the judge said that Thomas and Xander had been on ”bad terms” with Adam due to a drug deal gone bad and had “harbored an intent” to kill him.

CCTV footage was reported in court showing the pair chasing Adam with knives into the garden of a property on Smelter Wood Road. It also showed Xander wearing a stab proof vest, wielding the machete over his head and walking towards Adam.
Following a 12-week trial, on December 4, the pair were found guilty.
Adam’s mother had a statement which was read to the court. It said,
“Every single day I have to come to terms that I will never see him again in this world.
It has left me with a broken heart. My life will never be the same again. Living is so hard. My life is empty without you.”

During sentencing, the judge said they were to have a “lengthy sentence” in order for the pair to “reflect the scourge of knife crime.”
“I know that today’s sentencing will not bring Adam back, but I hope this gives those who knew him some sort of closure as they try to rebuild their lives and recover from the grief inflicted upon them.
Hardiman and Howarth killed Adam in barbaric fashion and left him to die all alone as he bled out on a stranger’s doorstep.
If fleeing the scene wasn’t horrific and cowardly enough, they then made Adam’s loved ones relive the events of that day by putting them through a 12-day trial after denying murdering him.
We will not tolerate knife crime in our local communities and we are pleased that the sentence given reflects the severity and seriousness of Hardiman and Howarth’s actions.”
Sheffield Crown Court handed both teens a minimum term of 19 years in prison.
